Emergency Plan

Dear Stark Families:

We wanted to share the safety drills your students will participate in throughout the year as part of our comprehensive safety plan. The goal of practicing in the drills is to help our students feel safe at school and to know what to do should an emergency arise. We are sharing this information with you so you may discuss the types of drills with your child/children. Below is a brief description of the drills that will be practiced throughout the school year:

FIRE DRILLS

The school will conduct a “fire drill” each month that school is in session. This is a Fire Code requirement as well as a requirement by Stamford Public Schools. We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded. By practicing they will know what to do and how to do it.

LOCKDOWN

This type of drill will secure the school building and safely shelter all students, staff and visitors inside the building. The purpose of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger outside or inside the building. During a “lockdown” all of the perimeter doors to the school building will be locked and will remain locked until the danger or issue outside or inside the building is removed. To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the authorities authorize such a release.

SHELTER IN PLACE

Sheltering in place often referred to as a soft lockdown means taking immediate shelter wherever you are, whether it's in school or outside of the building. No one enters or exits the school building until lifted and or all cleared.

EVACUATION

This emergency plan will help facilitate how to exit the school in a quick and orderly manner. This is most typically used for a fire drill. Each class follows a specific exit plan and route and are accounted for while waiting quietly with teachers and staff outside the building in a safe location. No one can enter the school during an evacuation.

Please remember that these safety practice drills are conducted to help maintain the reputation of our school which is to be a safe place to learn and work for our students and staff.
